Yesterday on the way to school Grayson spotted a turtle in the road. Well for those of you that don't know Grayson very well, I must tell you that he LOVES turtles. For two years he ate, drank, and slept turtles. He is not quite as obsessed this year, but he still has a passion for them. So, needless to say, despite the fact that we were running late, he convinced me to turn around and go back so he could "save" the turtle. The turtle was moving fairly fast and was already almost to the other side of the road by the time we got back (30 sec. later). However, Grayson proudly hopped out, picked up the turtle and put him in the grass just off the road. It was a pretty big turtle too. I would say it was probably over 2 years old. Anyway, Grayson was puffed up about his "good deed" of the day. And I was pretty proud of myself for fostering my little guy's self esteem.
So, on the way home, (not far from the site of the turtle rescue) two huge ground hogs ran out in front of us. Of course I slammed on the breaks to avoid the one that froze right in the middle of my lane. But why did I do that? Why do I care about stupid ground hogs? In recent years they have taken over the city of Liberty and surrounding areas. They ate most of my tomatoes 2 years ago despite my attempts at keeping them away. They leave huge holes all over yards and any hills you might drive past in town. I even saw one standing (on his hind legs) on the sidewalk right in front of Dollar General in Liberty. He was just looking around like he was a human. When I told my sister about that she said that she expects to see one walking down the side walk wearing a top hat and using a cane one day soon. Who knows, one may run for mayor one day. Watch out Brian Deese! The ground hog population may give you a run for your money.
Especially if they get the skunk population to support them....But that is a story for another day.
